Gemma and Kieran love each other deeply but life in London is wearing them, and their bank account, down. To keep afloat they welcome Ray into their small flat.

Accomplished chef Gemma and her paramedic boyfriend Kieran live together in west London, above Gemma's cafe. Kieran and Gemma are madly in love. But, unfortunately, love alone can't pay cafe suppliers or London rent. The pair are barely making ends meet and their different shift patterns mean they are like ships in the night. To ease some financial pressure, they decide to take in a lodger. Enter Ray, a former world-class synchronised swimmer, whose arrival with a Volvo full of baggage commences a modern-day love story that changes the trio's lives - and how they view relationships - forever.

It is the morning after their shared moment in the bathroom the night before. Gemma, Ray, and Kieran try to pretend that nothing happened. Gemma opens up the cafe as usual but is shocked when her estranged father shows up to interrogate her about her life choices.

Gemma and Kieran set a date for their wedding and our trio find a rhythm of living together and making each other's lives better. Ray helps Kieran in his physical recovery and he inspires her to get back in the water.

It's the day of Gemma and Kieran's wedding, but they're still reeling from Ray's heartfelt declaration the night before. Kieran lashes out as he struggles to come to terms with his feelings.

The day after the wedding. Gemma and Kieran miss their cab to the airport, but Ray drives them so that the couple doesn't miss their flight to go on a honeymoon. Dejected and confused, Ray reconnects with Moi, with calamitous consequences.

Ray's mum, Mathilde, visits London for Ray's birthday. It's been a year since Ray left home and Mathilde tries to navigate the distance growing between her and her only child. Over a tense birthday dinner, Mathilde observes a new dynamic between Ray and her landlords.

Gemma realises that she's run out of options to save the cafe. When Ray's solution highlights inequality in the triad's relationship, the three of them decide to come out to their friends and family.

The triad's unity is challenged by a sudden tragedy. Gemma rushes to her childhood home while Ray and Kieran look after Danny. Kieran suffers a panic attack which calls his future as a paramedic into question.
